The release of Jongo Love – our feature-length mobile-phone movie, shot on a cellphone on location in Kisumu and the Mathare slums of Nairobi – has been getting press around Kenya and the world.
On the eve of the digital release the cast and crew appeared on NTV’s youth style show The Trend, and TV features also appeared on N24 and the BBC. The launch trended on Twitter five times in the first week, and movie’s been written up in The Star and also in the article below from The Times of London.
But while it’s great to be getting such international press, the bigger story is the reception from our fans around Kenya. With thousands of copies of the DVD delivered to video dens in every County and the film available for download on YouTube and other torrent websites, tens of thousands of young people have already watched the film and the follow-up conversation is live now on Facebook. Between DJB’s Facebook page and the dedicated Jongo Love page, over 170,000 young Kenyans are following the story and talking about the power of possibility that it unlocks.
